Atlantis
- the Kingdom of Poseidon, Greek God
of the Sea
(extracts
from the dialogues of Plato 348 BC)
.... beyond the strait you call the
Pillars of Hercules ( Straits of Gibraltar ) an island, larger
than Asia and Libya together, from where it was possible to
sell to other islands and thereon on the whole continent,
which encloses the sea truly named after it.. On the island
of Atlantis there existed a great and admirable kingdom.
A plain extended from the sea towards the centre of the island;
of all the plains it was said to be the most beautiful and
excellent....in the centre stood a temple sacred to Poseidon.....
the entire ivory ceiling was seen to be the decorated with
gold, silver and orichalc.... it also contained statues of
the god [Poseidon] driving a chariot with six winged horses
surrounded by a hundred Nereid's (nymphs of the sea) sitting
astride dolphins.
This mighty power once tried to subdue both your country and
ours.....
